1947/48 wurde die Broadway-Show mit Tony Awards für Michael Kidd (Best Choreography), David Wayne (Best Featured Actor in a Musical) und Milton Rosenstock (Conductor and Musical Director) ausgezeichnet, und dank Melodien wie “Old Devil Moon”, “How Are Things In Glocca Morra”, “Fiddle Faddle”, “Look To The Rainbow”, “Something Sort of Grandish”, “The Great ‘Come-and-Get-It’ Day” und einigen mehr ist diese Show bis heute unvergessen geblieben.

Über die Encores!-Aufführung schrieb Variety:

This was the unconventional musical comedy that jolted postwar audiences back in 1947 with high spirits, extravagant comedy and political satire strong enough to land lyricist and co-librettist E.Y. Harburg on Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s A-list. But Harburg’s message was sufficiently coated with Irish blarney and Burton Lane’s heart-swelling music to turn “Rainbow” into a surprise hit.
Attempts at full-scale revival over the years have been squashed by fears that the political and racial content would be either too dated or inflammatory for modern tastes. That turns out to be a load of blarney itself; adapter David Ives has removed the one line about Karl Marx and somewhat finessed the use of blackface, but the heart — and most of the jokes — in Harburg and Fred Saidy’s book remain. The humor does seem quaint at times, but that’s part of the package the authors used to sugarcoat their social messages.

In der Associated Press war zu lesen:

Whimsy with a social conscience - and a glorious score.
That’s the best way to describe “Finian’s Rainbow,” the Burton Lane-E.Y. Harburg-Fred Saidy musical, which “Encores!” has brought back in a delightful concert version for a run through Sunday at City Center.
This is a shamrock-tinged fantasy awash in a great deal of Irish blarney and married to a satiric story by Harburg and Saidy that takes on the evils of racism and capitalism. But don’t expect too much of a sermon in this show, which features the expansive, irresistible melodies of Burton Lane.

Viertel:

“What Encores! gave us was a joyous evening put together in just over a week. We have the ability to fill out that template, keeping the essence of the performance front and center, but giving it a treatment that will be appropriate for Broadway.
