Verletzte, Hauptdarsteller, die das Handtuch werfen, Pannen, Absagen … das Schicksal meint es nicht gut mit der Cast, den Produzenten & dem Leading Team des Musicals “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”.

Nun werfen sich ein paar Broadway-Veteranen in die Diskussion, aber nicht für Julie Taymor - im Gegenteil:

«They should put Julie Taymor in jail for assault”, schrieb Adam Pascal (”Rent”) auf Facebook. Alice Ripley (”Next to Normal”) twitterte erst kürzlich: «Does someone have to die?”

Das nächste Problem der Show könnte Hauptdarsteller Reeve Carney werden. Er scheint, berichten mehrere Quellen, Stimmprobleme zu bekommen und etwa sein Solo “Boy falls from Sky” längst nicht mehr gut liefern zu können.

Was zwar eine Unsitte ist, aber bei einer derart überdimensionierten Preview-Phase wie bei “Spider-Man” auch schon wieder verständlich: Die Medien veröffentlichen ihre ersten Kritiken, und auch die fallen nicht positiv aus. So liest man auf Bloomberg:

A few good songs would help, in which department the show is sorely lacking. Like most rock stars, Bono and The Edge haven’t a clue about writing for the theater. Many of the numbers are fragments and none offers much psychological insight into character. Tellingly, the ones that work best — «Rise Above” and «Deeply Furious” — belong to Arachne, who also gets the title song, a lame item indeed.

The real problem of director Julie Taymor and U2’s unwieldy catastrophe is that it is really, truly horrendously and unfixably bad down to its bones. The book is a travesty, the music is lazy and awful — it’s like listening to the scraps left on the floor after U2 recorded “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” — and the actors, including the voice-cracking lead Reeve Carney, are just not up to the vague, sloppy task set before them. If every flying element worked pretty much perfectly, as it did when I saw it, the show is still one of the worst things, if not the worst, I’ve ever seen on Broadway.

Dass das Publikum derzeit wie verrückt Tickets für Previews dieser Show kauft - man muss das verstehen. Der Thrill, bei einem Spektakel dabei zu sein, bei dem die Chance groß ist, live ein Unglück zu erleben … das war schon in der Antike ein Erfolgsrezept, und das ist bei einem Formel-1-Rennen ebenfalls kein unwesentlicher Faktor. Die Frage ist, was das in dem einen Fall noch mit Sport und in unserem Fall mit dem Musicalgenre zu tun hat. Doch vielleicht setzt die Löwen-Julie hier neue Maßstäbe, und “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” wird die erste Las-Vegas-Show, die ihr Try-out am Broadway hatte.
