600 Songs aus Disney-Filmen, das war die Ausgangsbasis. Das Ziel: die bekannten Hits aus den Animationsblockbustern unser aller Jugend in neuem Gewand zu zeigen, diesmal im Jazzgewand. So neu ist dieses Ziel natürlich nicht. Disneys Filmhits wurden schon in den unterschiedlichsten Stilmäntelchen veröffentlicht, und Disneys Faible für Jazz lässt sich bis in die 1920er Jahre zurückverfolgen. Umgekehrt wählten einige der prominentesten Jazzer der Welt immer wieder Disney-Songs in ihr Repertoire, wie Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis oder John Coltrane, um nur einige zu nennen. Dieses Mal sollte das Projekt mit aktuellen Jazzgrößen umgesetzt werden. Herausgekommen ist die CD «Everybody Wants To Be A Cat: Disney Jazz, Volume 1†(Walt Disney Records), produziert von Jason Olaine.
Olaine startete vor zwei Jahren mit der Umsetzung und kontaktierte renommierte Jazzmusiker. Der Auftrag an alle Interessierten war, in einem Satz formuliert, einen Disney-Klassiker neu zu interpretieren, in welchem Arrangement und in welchem musikalischen Stil auch immer.
Olaine dazu:
I wanted to get a group of people together who would represent the many styles of jazz, such as getting The Bad Plus for an adventurous take, Regina Carter for a world music-oriented rendering and Joshua Redman for a well-rounded sound. We wanted to get the breadth and depth of what jazz is, as well as represent the generations of players, ranging from Dave Brubeck, who recorded a full album of Disney music, Dave Digs Disney, in 1957, to Nikki Yanofsky, who’s still a teenager.

Bemerkenswert an dieser CD ist beispielsweise, dass es sich um den ersten Tonträger mit einer Aufnahme von Esperanza Spalding nach ihrem Grammy-Gewinn 2011 handelt. Als “Best New Artist” wurde die Künstlerin ausgezeichnet, für Disney interpretiert sie “Chim Chim Cher-ee” aus “Mary Poppins”. Spalding über ihre Wahl:
I’ve always been haunted by this song since I first saw Mary Poppins as a child. It has been such a treat to re-visit this music as an adult and explore the magic of the melody. The melody of ‘Chim Chim Ceree’ is sweet and lilting, yet has a bitter tinge of melancholy. …Finding a way to add to this song without burying the magic of it’s simplicity was challenging.
Einer der prominenten Produzenten dieser CD: Quincy Jones. Unter seiner Obhut entstand Alfredo Rodriguez’ Neuinterpretation von «The Bare Necessities†[The Jungle Book]. Der kubanische Klaviervirtuose liefert ein sensationelles, atemberaubendes Meisterstück.
Die kanadische Jazzsängerin Nikki Yanofsky war gerade mal 15 Jahre alt, als sie ihre Version von “It’s A Small World” eingesungen hat, eine Big-Band-Version, in der sie ihren beeindruckenden Stimmumfang gekonnt demonstriert, mit einer großartigen Scat-Einlage.
Der 90-jährige Dave Brubeck spielte “Someday My Prince Will Come” schon 1957 ein für seine CD “Dave Digs Disney”. 54 Jahre danach sieht er sich in einem swingenden Walzer-Arrangement mit diesem Hit gut aufgehoben, eine klassische Brubeck-Version. Gemeinsam mit Roberta Gambrini ist er auch auf “Alice in Wonderland” zu hören.
Die innovativste Version eines Disney-Hits (”Gaston” aus “The Beauty and the Beast”) liefert sicher “The Bad Plus”: abstrakt, verrückt, wunderbar, eine Mischung aus Dekonstruktion und Verspieltheit. Schon diese Version allein ist es wert, sich die CD zuzulegen.
