Die Macher des Musicals “Jerry Springer: The Opera” haben sich ein neues Thema ausgeknobelt, das publicitytauglich ist: das Leben von Anna Nicole Smith. Richard Thomas und Mark-Anthony Turnage schreiben das Libretto für die Show, die in Londons Royal Opera House 2010 zur Aufführung kommen wird.

In “Anna Nicole Smith: The Opera” dreht sich alles um das tragische Schicksal der Schauspielerin und ehemaligen Stripperin, die vor einem Jahr an einer Überdosis gestorben ist, oder um es marketingtauglich zu formulieren: das Ganze ist “a classic American tale about celebrity, which was intrinsically operatic”. Richard Thomas:

It’s an incredible story. It’s very operatic and sad. She was quite a smart lady with the tragic flaw that she could not seem to get through life without a vat of prescription drugs. For me, (the story) ends when she does. It’s an American story. I love American culture. Especially for the opera, the stories seem to work on a grander more epic scale.
