Mit “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria” hat es begonnen - ein Trend, Musicalrollen mittels Castingshows zu besetzen. Andrew Lloyd Webber castete im Sommer 2006 seine “Maria” für eine Londoner Revival-Produktion von “The Sound Of Music” im Rahmen einer TV-Sendereihe, nicht ohne vorher darauf hinzuweisen, wie schlecht er die Musicalausbildung in England findet. Die Show wurde ein Quotenhit, das Revival selbst kam bei den Kritikern gut an. Lloyd Webber:

“The success of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? this summer was a real boost for musical theatre in Britain and I was particularly thrilled with the reaction from schoolchildren up and down the country. I cannot wait to get them involved in Any Dream Will Do and to get back into the studio with Graham. Joseph started in schools and I am looking for a great school choir - to play in the West End, we need a smashing girl, a great boy and of course a Pharaoh/Elvis.”

Demnächst gehen zwei weitere Musical-Castingshows in England über die Bühne. Lloyd Webber sucht für “Joseph” einen Hauptdarsteller, “Pop Idol”-Erfinder Simon Cowell wird auf ITV für eine Bühnenproduktion von “Grease” die Hauptrollen “Danny” und “Sandy” im Rahmen einer Castingshow besetzen. Cowell:

“Very simply, Grease is the word. In my opinion, Grease is the best musical on the planet. These two parts will be the most sought-after roles in the West End.”

Na Gott sei Dank. Wenn jemand “Grease” für das beste Musical hält, muss man sich keine Sorgen machen. Da darf er schon mal ein paar Jungs und Mädchen von der Straße holen. Viel Erfolg auch.
