[story]

ABC-TV will present a new television movie based on the life of Lena Horne next year.
The New York Post reports that Grammy Award winner Janet Jackson will portray the legendary star of stage and screen in the new biopic. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron — of “Chicago” film fame — will produce the movie, which will feature Jackson singing the tunes Horne made famous.
The telefilm will be based on “Lena,” the autobiography written by Horne with contributions by Time Magazine’s Richard Shickel.
Lena Horne made her Broadway debut in the 1934 play Dance With Your Gods. She also starred in the original musical revue Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds of 1939 and the musical Jamaica; she was nominated for a Tony Award for her work in the latter. In 1981 she returned to Broadway with Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, winning a Special Tony Award for her performance. Horne’s many screen credits include “Panama Hattie,” “Cabin in the Sky,” “Stormy Weather,” “Broadway Rhythm,” “Till the Clouds Roll By” and “The Wiz.” [story]

Recent newspaper headlines, proclaiming “Barry Manilow Breaks Nose” have already achieved the same notoriety as “Fog in Channel: Continent Cut Off” and “Dundee Man Drowns: 1500 Also Die As Titanic Hits Iceberg”.
There is something deliciously absurd about the man and his world-famous proboscis, but not so absurd to have prevented him from selling 58 million records, winning a Grammy, an Emmy, a Tony and playing both the Superbowl and Bill Clinton’s inaugural ball.
Manilow’s idiosyncratic brand of easy listening music has won him a legion of adoring middle-aged matrons, yet the man himself remains charmingly disarming and refreshingly self-deprecating. [story]

Say someone drops the name Bertrand Burgalat and it’s the first time you’ve ever heard of the guy. What kind of music might you expect someone with a name like that to create? Would it be lush and cinematic? Would it be sensual and exotic? Would it be decadent and cultured? Would it be cosmopolitan? Would it be glamorous? Would it be ever so clever? Would it be as smooth as the finest silk? Damn right, it would! It would be all of those things! [story]

Fans of Diane Schuur know the story: blind since birth, singing professionally at 9, discovered by the late saxophonist Stan Getz at the 1979 Monterey Jazz Festival. And don’t forget her passion for the singers, such as Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan, who inspired Schuur at a tender age.
So perhaps it’s no surprise that the 49-year-old Schuur’s new CD, “Midnight” (Concord Jazz) pays tribute to standards she grew up hearing in her formative years.
There’s just one catch. Most of the 13 songs on “Midnight” are recent arrivals to the canon.
The album was actually the brainchild of singer-songwriter Barry Manilow and his longtime collaborator Eddie Arkin. Schuur, known to most friends as Deedles, had worked with both men on Manilow’s 1988 jazz foray, “Swing Street.” [story; weitere Berichte: 1, 2, 3, 4]

Legendary ABBA songwriter Bjorn Ulvaeus is delighted his musical Mamma Mia! is making him more money than when he was in the ’70s chart-toppers. The “Waterloo” star wrote the music and lyrics for the stage show, which this week was watched by its 10 millionth audience member, with former ABBA colleague Benny Andersson - and he’s seen the proceeds stack up. Bjorn, 57, says, “It’s going to make me richer than ABBA ever did. In the ’70s, groups didn’t make the incredible deals that they did in the ’80s and ’90s. They never became as rich. It’s never bothered me. We were only ever in it for the love of music. Having too much too soon can be very dangerous anyway.” And despite his love for writing ABBA’s songs, Bjorn doesn’t yearn for the good old days. He says, “I’m not nostalgic for those days. I wouldn’t like to have it back. Creating was what I really enjoyed. In this business, it all begins and ends with a song. Without that, no one is anything.” [story]
