Fame - das Comeback eines Erfolgskonzepts
“Fame” - es begann alles mit einem Kassenschlager von Alan Parker aus dem Jahre 1979. “Fame - Der Weg zum Ruhm”, eine Hommage an die Jugend und den Tanz, erhielt zwei British Academy Awards, wurde sechsmal für den Oscar und viermal für einen Golden Globe nominiert. In der Folge wurde das Erfolgskonzept in einer Fernsehserie weitergesponnen.
Als Musical feierte das Konzept im Cambridge Theatre des Londoner West Ends im Juni 1995 seine Premiere. 14 Monate war die Show zu sehen, danach kam es zu diversen Londoner Revival-Produktionen (derzeit läuft “Fame” im Aldwych Theatre) sowie zu Inszenierungen in den USA, Kanada, Australien und Europa.
2003 scheint das Jahr zu werden, in dem der “Fame”-Boom einen neuen Höhepunkt erreicht. Alan Parkers Meisterwerk ist dieser Tage als DVD erschienen, der dazugehörige Soundtrack ist remastered mit Extra-Tracks neu veröffentlicht worden.
Im Herbst schließlich wird das FAME-Revival in der Broadway-Premiere einer Neuinszenierung der Show im Little Shubert Theatre gipfeln. Es ist dies gleichzeitig auch die New-York-Premiere des Musicals, denn obwohl Tournee-Produktionen durch das ganze Land reisten, erreichte keine davon den Broadway. Über das Creative Team der Produktion ist nichts bekannt, einen der Hauptdarsteller hat man jedoch fixiert. Es wird dies der/die Gewinnerin der NBC Talente-Show “Fame” sein, die derzeit in Amerika ausgestrahlt wird.

The top two “American Idol” contestants capture the top two spots on Billboard’s Hot 100, as Clay Aiken’s “This Is the Night” (RCA) debuts at No. 1 and Ruben Studdard’s “Flying Without Wings” (J Records) opens at No. 2. It’s the first time in the 45-year history of the Hot 100 that the top two positions are new entries.
Aiken’s “This Is the Night” is the first song to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 since 1998, and the first since chart rules were changed to allow airplay-only tracks to appear on the chart alongside commercially released singles. Those new chart policies make it almost impossible for a song to enter the chart in pole position, or in the top-5, but the massive sales on the two “Idol” singles made their historic debuts possible.

Ralph Macchio - Von Hollywood nach Nirgendwo?
1984 sorgte ein Film weltweit für Furore: Karate Kid. Der Star des Blockbusters: Ralph Macchio. 2003 wird es das zehnte Jahr in Folge sein, dass der einstige Hero keinen “großen” Film gedreht hat - und dabei ist dies nicht die erste lange Pause für den Schauspieler. Denn nach dem entsetzlichen Flop des Jahres 1989, Karate Kid III, war er für Hollywood Kassengift. Hauptrollen blieben ihm zumeist versagt, nennenswerte Auftritte hatte er nur im grandiosen Streifen My Cousin Vinny (1992) und dem ebenfalls famosen Naked in New York (1993).
Bescheidene Erfolge feierte er in Musicalproduktionen wie “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying”, mit denen er durch Amerika tingelte.
2002 startete Macchio eine neue Karriere als Autor und Regisseur. Sein erstes Produkt: Love thy Brother. ein 10-minütiger Film, der ihm beim 2002 Stony Brook Film Festival einen Preis in der Kategorie “AUDIENCE CHOICE – BEST SHORT” einbrachte.
Ralph Macchio - das ist aber nicht nur ein Schauspieler, für viele ist er ein Tor, das zurück in die eigene Vergangenheit führt; wenn sie ihn sehen, macht es *klick*:

Director Francis Coppola continued his S.E.Hinton adaptation “thing” with his next film, the visually interesting, experimental but difficult-to-like “Rumble Fish” featuring Dillon and Lane again, a then-watchable Mickey Rourke and the director’s 19-year-old nephew, Nicholas Cage (formerly Coppola). Love the black & white (except for the red fish, of course) photography, the moving clouds, the clocks and the “air of doom” but the movie still comes across as a pretentious misfire (to most).
The Outsiders - das war für Ralph Macchio der erste bedeutende Leinwandschritt in Richtung Star, und auch wenn der Streifen, dessen Hauptdarsteller allesamt zu mehr oder minder langjährigen Hollywood-Stars mutierten, heute nur mehr als “guilty pleasure” gesehen wird, so warte ich auf ein Revival dieses Meisterwerks von Francis Ford Coppola. Vielleicht in einer anderen Welt, in einer anderen Zeit.

Principal Casting Announced for Phantom Film: 16-Year-Old Emmy Rossum is Christine
A 16-year-old New Yorker, Emmy Rossum, has landed a lead role in the upcoming film of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.
Really Useful Films announced June 13 that Rossum will play opera singer Christine Daae, whose voice is inspired by the Phantom. Already an acclaimed opera singer, Rossum has been performing with the Metropolitan Opera since the age of seven. She appeared in the television productions “The Audrey Hepburn Story,” “Songcatcher” and “An American Rhapsody” and was recently seen in Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” at the Cannes Film Festival.
Rossum will join 33-year-old Scottish actor Gerard Butler, who will play the title role, created on stage in London and on Broadway by Tony Award winner Michael Crawford. Butler began his career on the stage opposite Ewan McGregor in the stage adaptation of “Trainspotting.” His feature-film credits include “Mrs. Brown,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “Dracula 2000″ and “Reign of Fire.” [story]
