Thomas Schumacher, Präsident der Disney Theatrical Productions: “The Toronto engagement of The Lion King has far exceeded our expectations. When we opened here, we originally planned an 18-month run as a part of a North American tour. But with our success in Toronto, we were put in the enviable position of having to create an entirely new production for the U.S. tour, allowing us to extend out Toronto engagement. When we conclude our run at the Princess of Wales Theatre on Sunday, September 28, we will have played more than three-and-a-half years, over 1300 performances to over 2.3 million people.”

Nach ABBA (”Mamma Mia”), Queen (”We will Rock you”), Madness (”Our House”), Boy George (”Taboo”) Billy Joel (”Movin’ out”) oder den Pet Shop Boys (”Closer to heaven”) bekommt nun auch Rod Stewart sein eigenes Musical.
Die Uraufführung des Stewart-Musicals findet am 6. November 2003 in Londons Victoria Palace statt, die Previews starten am 15. Oktober.
“Tonight’s the Night” basiert nicht auf der Biographie der britischen Rockröhre, sondern wird von Ben Elton ähnlich wie “We will Rock you” gefertigt. Die Songs dienen als Inspiration für eine Story. Highlights der Show: “Maggie May”, “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy”, “You Wear It Well”, “Hot Legs”, “The Killing of Georgie”, “First Cut Is the Deepest”, “You’re in My Heart” und der Titelsong “Tonight’s the Night”. Was die bei der Pressekonferenz anwesenden Darsteller zu ihrem Engegament meinten, kann man - hier - nachlesen.
Am 6. Mai 2003 traten Elton John und sein langjähriger Partner Bernie Taupin an die Öffentlichkeit, um ein neues Projekt anzukündigen: “The Vampire Lestat”, ein neues Musical, das 2005 am Broadway Premiere feiern soll.
Das neue Elton John-Werk basiert auf Anne Rices Kultroman-Serie “Die Chronik der Vampire” und ist das erste Broadway-Abenteuer von Warner Bros. Was haben wir zu erwarten? Eine neue Rockoper? Taupin dazu: “Our intention is make a classically-based show that is stripped of gothic clichà©s and that shows the vampire dealing with his damnation on a more realistic and human level. Please let me make this clear this is NOT a rock opera. Our hope is that it will be stylish, sexy, intelligent, rich and hypnotically dark.”
Linda Woolverton (”The Lion King”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Aida”) wird für das Buch zur Show verantwortlich zeichnen, die Regie übernimmt Robert Jess Roth (”Beauty and the Beast”). Emanuel Azenberg produziert die Show. [story]
Am 28. April 2003 wurden die Nominierungen für die 69. Drama League Awards bekannt gegeben, die am 9. Mai verliehen werden. Eine Nominierung ist geradezu als sensationell zu bezeichnen, wurde doch in der Kategorie “Distinguished Performance Nominees” Michael Crawford für das Broadway-Debakel Dance of the Vampires aufgestellt.
Dance of the Vampires, das in Europa äußerst erfolgreiche Vampir-Musical von Michael Kunze und Jim Steinman, brachte es am Broadway in der Saison 2002/03 auf nur insgesamt 61 Previews und 56 reguläre Vorstellungen. Am 9. Dezember 2002 feierte es seine glanzvolle Premiere und wurde tags darauf von Broadways Kritikern vernichtet. Ken Mandelbaum, Broadway.com-Kritiker, schrieb:
For those who found Jekyll & Hyde too intellectually challenging, Dance of the Vampires may be just the thing. A bona fide Eurotrash bonanza, Vampires would surely have been wiser to unpack its bags in the West End or in Las Vegas. It may make one nostalgic for such hallowed Minskoff Theatre fare as Rockabye Hamlet, Got Tu Go Disco, Marilyn: An American Fable, Teddy and Alice, Tom Sawyer, Saturday Night Fever, or even Metro, the Minskoff’s last foreign-language import. Needless to say, collectors will have to catch Dance of the Vampires. As the title of one of Krolock’s songs puts it, a good nightmare comes so rarely. Don’t forget the garlic.

Wie Broadway.com berichtet, könnte Schauspieler/Serienstar Gregory Harrison in diesem Sommer am Broadway jene Rolle spielen, die Richard Gere auf der großen Leinwand interpretiert hat: jene des schleimigen Anwalts Billy Flynn im Kander/Ebb-Musical Chicago. (Eine offizielle Bestätigung steht noch aus.)
Harrison kann schon auf eine ganze Reihe von Schauspielproduktionen verweisen, bei denen er mitgewirkt hat, so zum Beispiel “Steel Pier” und “Follies”, “The Fantasticks”, “The Promise”, “The Subject Was Roses”, “Festival”, “Child’s Play”, “Picnic”, “Billy Budd”, “Carnal Knowledge” und “The Hasty Heart”, eine Rolle, die ihm den L.A. Drama Critics Best Actor Award ein brachte.
In Europa dürfte Harrsion wohl den meisten durch die Serien “Falcon Crest” oder “Trapper John MD” bekannt sein.
