Footlosse, the Broadway musical, will next year embark on a six-month, nationwide tour ahead of a possible West End transfer. The show’s premiere UK production will open at the Theatre Royal Plymouth on 5 February 2004 before continuing until mid-August to more than 20 further venues.
Based on the 1984 Hollywood film starring Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer, Footloose centres on city boy Ren who moves with his family to a small town in middle America where rock music and dancing are outlawed for religious reasons. Sparks fly when Ren and the minister’s teenaged daughter rebel. [story]

“Summertime: This Was Then” & “Summertime: This Is Now” - zwei CDs, auf denen sich die unterschiedlichsten Künstler dem Gershwin-Klassiker widmen. Seit 26. Juni ist CD1 im Handel erhältlich. Am 16. August fällt nach 10 Monaten Aufführungszeit der letzte Vorhang für eines jener Musicals, die sich an der “Mamma Mia!”-Erlolgsstory anhängen wollten. Basierend auf den Hits der englischen Popgruppe “Madness” wurde eine Show gezimmert, die zwar im Februar 2003 einen Olivier Award als “Best New Musical” einbrachte, das Publikum aber nicht zu begeistern vermochte.
Der Produzent der Show, Peter Bennett-Jones, sieht das naturgemäß anders: “The decision was taken with a heavy heart. It is a terrific show, which well deserved its prestigious Olivier award. It continues to generate a great response from audiences, who love this entertaining and engaging show. But these are difficult times, politically and economically, and we are among the casualties. We hope those who have not yet marvelled at seeing Our House will grab the opportunity to do so during the coming weeks.” [story]

“Fame” - es begann alles mit einem Kassenschlager von Alan Parker aus dem Jahre 1979. “Fame - Der Weg zum Ruhm”, eine Hommage an die Jugend und den Tanz, erhielt zwei British Academy Awards, wurde sechsmal für den Oscar und viermal für einen Golden Globe nominiert. In der Folge wurde das Erfolgskonzept in einer Fernsehserie weitergesponnen.
Als Musical feierte das Konzept im Cambridge Theatre des Londoner West Ends im Juni 1995 seine Premiere. 14 Monate war die Show zu sehen, danach kam es zu diversen Londoner Revival-Produktionen (derzeit läuft “Fame” im Aldwych Theatre) sowie zu Inszenierungen in den USA, Kanada, Australien und Europa.
2003 scheint das Jahr zu werden, in dem der “Fame”-Boom einen neuen Höhepunkt erreicht. Alan Parkers Meisterwerk ist dieser Tage als DVD erschienen, der dazugehörige Soundtrack ist remastered mit Extra-Tracks neu veröffentlicht worden.
Im Herbst schließlich wird das FAME-Revival in der Broadway-Premiere einer Neuinszenierung der Show im Little Shubert Theatre gipfeln. Es ist dies gleichzeitig auch die New-York-Premiere des Musicals, denn obwohl Tournee-Produktionen durch das ganze Land reisten, erreichte keine davon den Broadway. Über das Creative Team der Produktion ist nichts bekannt, einen der Hauptdarsteller hat man jedoch fixiert. Es wird dies der/die Gewinnerin der NBC Talente-Show “Fame” sein, die derzeit in Amerika ausgestrahlt wird.

As is the custom the week after the Tony Awards are handed out, Broadway grosses surged upward significantly last week, with all but three productions seeing gains at the box office. According to figures from the League of American Theatres and Producers, last week’s grosses were $14,452,497, exceeding last year’s total for this time frame by some $600,000. Still, attendance figures fell short: 224,701 tickets last week, versus 225,743 ducats for this week last year.
The increase in grosses can be attributed, of course, to the power of the Tonys. Still, the post-award fallout has begun, with six shows closing in June and some audiences madly scooping up seats before the final curtains fall. Prior to the awards on Sun., June 8, the producers of “A Year With Frog and Toad” announced the show would leap from its lily pad on Sun., June 15; the Roundabout Theatre Company had also announced that the poorly received “The Look of Love” would truncate a planned extension and shutter on the same day. A 16-year-old New Yorker, Emmy Rossum, has landed a lead role in the upcoming film of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.
Really Useful Films announced June 13 that Rossum will play opera singer Christine Daae, whose voice is inspired by the Phantom. Already an acclaimed opera singer, Rossum has been performing with the Metropolitan Opera since the age of seven. She appeared in the television productions “The Audrey Hepburn Story,” “Songcatcher” and “An American Rhapsody” and was recently seen in Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” at the Cannes Film Festival.
Rossum will join 33-year-old Scottish actor Gerard Butler, who will play the title role, created on stage in London and on Broadway by Tony Award winner Michael Crawford. Butler began his career on the stage opposite Ewan McGregor in the stage adaptation of “Trainspotting.” His feature-film credits include “Mrs. Brown,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “Dracula 2000″ and “Reign of Fire.” [story]

Two events over the past weekend had me thinking. The first thought occurred on Saturday when I went to the Lincoln Center Library to see a discussion on “The Past, Present, and Future of Original Cast Recordings.” The panel consisted of Seymour Red Press, a musician and music coordinator of Gypsy in 1959, Mame in 1966, and Good Time Charley in 1975, among dozens of other shows; Brian Drutman, senior director of Decca Broadway, who’s recorded LaChiusa’s The Wild Party and reissued Two Gentlemen of Verona, among dozens of other discs; Kurt Deutsch, president of Sh-K-Boom Records, and his wife and frequent Sh-K-Boom performer Sherie Renà© Scott, both of whose names can be found on the cast albums of The Last 5 Years and Debbie Does Dallas. In other words, it was a nice mix of the “past, present, and future” as advertised in the title. [story]

Es war nicht zuletzt der Abend der beiden Schauspiel-Legenden Vanessa Redgrave und Brian Dennehy, der Abend der 57. Tony-Awards-Verleihung, die gestern über die Bühne ging. Für ihre Interpretationen in dem Bühnenschauspiel “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” gewannen Vanessa Redgrave und Brian Dennehy die begehrten Auszeichnungen als “Best Leading Actress in a Play” bzw. “Best Leading Actor in a Play”. Gleich 8 Tonys räumte das Musical “Hairspray” ab, eine Show, die wohl in Europa nie aufgeführt werden wird. Billy Joel konnte mit seinem ersten Musical “Movin’ Out” in der Kategorie “Best Orchestration” punkten. Zusammengefasst die Gewinner des Abends:

“Deutschland sucht den Superstar”, “American Idol”, “Pop Idol”, “Starmania”, “Born to DIVA”, “Fame Academy” - die Flut an Casting/Talente-Shows ist schön langsam nicht mehr zu überblicken … doch wir stehen erst am Anfang. In den USA startete Ende Mai Fame - NBC’s Ultimate Talent Search : The Fame series will chronicle Debbie Allen’s attempts to recruit multi-talented performers (ages 16 and up) from across the country, followed by an intense boot camp drill by Allen. As the group hones their skills and rehearse their routines in front of celebrity judges, family and friends, the field is narrowed. Viewers at home will determine who ultimately travels the path all the way to Fame.
Justin “J.J.” Jacoby hat sich als erster Medienliebling herauskristallisiert. Wie weit wird er kommen? Hat einer der Talente-Wettbewerbe eigentlich schon einen weltweit “funktionierenden” Star hervorgebracht? Nö, aber wer weiß, vielleicht schafft es ja eine Kelly Clarkson, ein Gareth Gates oder ein Clay Aiken.
