NEW YORK, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ — On April 6, 2004 BMG will release Barry Manilow’s 2NightsLIVE! two CD set and the two DVD set UltimateMANILOW!, both sets from the superstar named “a giant among entertainers…the showman of our generation” by Rolling Stone Magazine. These major releases follow on the heels of Manilow’s platinum-plus smash album, ‘Ultimate Manilow,’ and heralds the start of BMG Strategic Marketing Group’s multi-year strategy for Barry Manilow’s music catalog.
2NightsLIVE! was recorded during Manilow’s sold out concerts in August 2002 at New Jersey’s PNC Arts Center. Each disc is unique and presents a full evening’s hit-filled fare from this masterful performer: “Night One” and “Night Two” (see full track listing at end). As a special bonus, 2NightsLIVE! also includes six never before recorded tracks. Manilow’s ManilowLIVE 2002! concert tour ranked in the annual TopTen of Concert Tours with more than 840,000 fans in attendance. Darius Rucker Leadsänger der US-Band “Hootie and the Blowfish”, hat sich als Barry Manilow-Fan geoutet: “I like Barry a lot,” said Rucker, who lists “Mandy,” “Weekend in New England,” and “Ships” as his favorite Manilow songs. “I’m not embarrassed. I’m proud. I like Barry.”

Seien wir doch mal ehrlich: Was wäre aus Florian Illies’ Buch Generation Golf geworden, wenn das Publikum beim Aufschlagen des Schmökers einen Lehrkurs in Sachen Golf oder eine Liste der Bestandteile eines Golfs vorgesetzt bekommen hätte. Mit einem Schmunzeln hätte man das Buch wohl wieder ins Regal zurückgestellt und sich sein Teil gedacht.
Nun, auf dem Markt ist derzeit ein Buch zu haben mit dem Titel Generation Blogger. Wer jedoch glaubt, hier eine interessante und spannende Abhandlung zum Phänomen Blogging geboten zu bekommen, irrt völlig. Womit der staunende Leser konfrontiert wird, ist zum Beispiel eine Anleitung, wie man bei blogger.com ein Account eröffnet und die Uhrzeit einstellt oder wie man “Movable Type” benutzt (und das gleich auf fast 100 Seiten). Die wirklich interessanten Infos zum eigentlichen Thema “Generation Blogger” (was ist das eigentlich, wodurch zeichnet sich diese Generation aus, wie ist sie fassbar etc.) hat man großteils schon in den diversen Blogs dieses Universums gelesen, sie sind veraltet und teilweise peinlich simpel: “mit einem Weblog können Sie publizieren, unkompliziert und weltweit” (S. 226). No na! Die Zielgruppe für dieses Buch gibt es nicht, denn es will allen genügen und ist daher für alle unbrauchbar. Schade, denn das Thema hätte sich Besseres und Spannenderes verdient. Aber das kann ja noch kommen.

Madonnas Maverick-Label hat eine vielversprechende Neuentdeckung am Start: Ben Jelen. Sein Video zur ersten Single “Come on” gibts auf seiner Website oder hier zum freien Download, seine erste CD wird Ende März in den Plattenläden stehen. In seinem “Journal” schreibt er am 7. Januar 2004:
“A little time to write - it’s a few hours before the big video shows on MTV for the first time, so I’m excited. Its different than watching a tape of it - maybe I’ll get to hear one of my songs on radio too. If that happens, I promise to take anyone I’m with at that moment out to dinner… or party…
Its been really busy recently - lots of stuff going on and I’m usually really appreciative of time to myself. I’m definitely one of those people that needs that - I love going out, having fun, being around everyone, but when it gets crazy I crave the quiet time to myself… put on a chill album and zone out. I guess everyone has that side to them.
There’s a lot to look forward to in the next week - it’ll be good to play my own show - I really love the guys in the band that I play with - they’re so musical and tight. Even the all day rehearsals once in a while are pretty fun.
I want to thank everyone reading this again for all of the support on the web site - I get on when I can and read a lot of the stuff - it means a lot to me to hear what you guys have to say. “

Am 26. Februar 2004 findet im Wiener Jugendstiltheater am Steinhof eine außergewöhnliche Opernpremiere statt: Im Krokodil - komponiert für 12 Klaviere, eine Produktion des sireneOperntheater, basierend auf einem Erzählfragment von
Fjodor M. Dostojewski. Die Komposition von Jury Everhartz wird interpretiert von: Lisa Fornhammar, Bernd Fröhlich, Marco Di Sapia, Alfred Werner, Rupert Bergmann, Barbara Dorfmann, Pia Ernstbrunner und Jakob Scheid. An den 12 Flügeln agieren Ulrike Fendel, Jeff Greiman, Victoria Grois, Hsin-Huei Huang, Elena Larina, Benjamin McQuade, Susanna Möller-Spaemann, Bernhard Ott, Richard Pfadenhauer, Guergov Rossen, Kyà´ko Yoshizawa, Johanna Ziegler. Die Regie hat Kristine Tornquist übernommen, für die musikalische Leitung zeichnet Marino Formenti verantwortlich.

Aus der Reihe CDs, die in keiner Sammlung fehlen sollten, heute: Blue von Joni Mitchell. Auf diesem Meisterwerk von 1971 findet man nicht nur das für mich wichtigste Weihnachtslied aller Zeiten “River”, sondern eine Songperle nach der anderen. Viele Kritiker behaupten, dass Joni vielleicht nach 1971 mit ihren CDs schon mal erfolgreicher war, aber nie besser.

Derzeit feiert Josh Groban mit seiner zweiten CD “Closer” in den USA einen Sensationserfolg sondergleichen. Vom Branchenfachblatt BILLBOARD zum King of Highbrow Pop gekrönt, debütierte “Closer” in den BILLBOARD 200 auf Platz 4 und ging gleich in der ersten Woche 375.000 Mal über den Ladentisch. In der siebten Chartswoche liegt die CD auf Platz 6 und hat bereits Doppelplatin-Status erreicht (2 Millionen verkaufte Exemplare). Hört man sich Groban an, so erinnert der 22-Jährige, der nicht zuletzt einem Gast-Auftritt in der TV-Serie “Ally McBeal” seinen rasanten Start verdankt, an seine europäischen Kollegen Bocelli/Watson; die Tendenz hin zu opernhafter Präsentation ist eindeutig. Hinter der Stimme arbeitet ein Produzententeam, das das wahre Erfolgsgeheimnis Grobans ist: David Foster, Walter Afanasieff und Eric Mouquet schreiben dem Sänger perfekte Balladen und produzieren sie aufs Opulenteste. Mittlerweile fischt Groban auch in neuen Gewässern. So gab er kürzlich in einer konzertanten Aufführung des ABBA-Musicals “Chess” sein Broadway-Debüt. Seit Anfang des Jahres ist er auf Welttournee.

Am 19. August 1977 fand im Toronto Truck Theatre die Premiere der nordamerikanischen Inszenierung von Agatha Christies “Mausefalle” statt. 26 erfolgreiche Jahre begeisterte die Show, die in London bereits seit November 1952 Tag für Tag die West End-Touristen anlockt. Nun ist Schluss. Am 15. Januar fällt der Vorhang zum letzten Mal für “North America’s longest-running production”, wie der griffige Werbeslogan so schön lautet. 9000 Vorstellungen, ein erstaunlicher Rekord. [story]

On a typical Sunday at Footlight Records, you’ll see hipsters snatching up Italian lounge CDs, hip-hop artists trolling for new beats among the vinyl movie soundtracks, seniors browsing through the Broadway cast recordings, a Liza impersonator scoring Cabaret on DVD. Since the 27-year-old East Village landmark fills niches that the chains ignore, its sales haven’t been hurt much by Tower or Virgin—the latter even refers customers here for imports. Best known for its rich cache of male and female vocalists, Footlight (113 East 12th Street; 212-533-1572; footlight1@aol.com) is also one of the few stores that carry certain works by Ur-monologuist Ruth Draper and the Akira Kurosawa soundtrack-CD boxed sets, and it’s the exclusive source for Dame Edna CDs. Owner Ron Saja started collecting the recordings of his favorite film composer, Bernard Herrmann, at 12; he bought Footlight in 1993 after working there for six years. Ironically, Saja prefers dramas to musicals, but he goes to the theater constantly and loves Avenue Q. (If only Princeton, Q’s mix-tape-constructing puppet, had access to Footlight—he might have moved beyond the Billy Joel basics.) [story]
