Bei den 53. Grammy Awards, die am 13. Februar 2011 über die Bühne gingen, gab es Preisträger in insgesamt 109 Kategorien. Für die Preisvergabe 2012 haben sich die Grammy Awards von 30 dieser 109 Kategorien verabschiedet. Gestrichen wurden unter anderem:

Best Rock Instrumental Performance
Best Urban/Alternative Performance
Best Contemporary Jazz Album
Best Traditional Gospel Album
Best Tejano Album
Best Traditional Blues Album
Best Contemporary Blues Album
Best Traditional Folk Album
Best Contemporary Folk Album
Best Hawaiian Music Album
Best Classical Album
Best Chamber Music Performance
Best Classical Crossover Album
Viele einander ähnliche Kategorien wurden zusammengelegt. Awards, die in Einzelkategorien an Sänger und Sängerinnen extra vergeben wurden, hat man quasi entgendered. Statt “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” und “Best Male Country Vocal Performance” beispielsweise gibt es ab 2012 die Kategorie: “Best Country Solo Performance”.
Eine weitere Neuerung: Gibt es für eine der verbleibenden Kategorien nicht mindestens 25 mögliche Preisträger, wird in dem betreffenden Jahr für diese Kategorie kein Preis vergeben. Ist das in drei aufeinanderfolgenden Jahren der Fall, wird auch diese Kategorie gestrichen.
In addition to the restructuring and voting changes, there have been name changes in four fields, including the Best Musical Show Album category, which will now be titled The Best Musical Theater Album. The description of that category reads, “For albums containing at least 51% playing time of new recordings. Award to the principle vocalist(s) and the album producer(s) of 51% or more playing time of the album. The lyricist(s) and composer(s) of a new score are eligible for an Award if they have written and/or composed a new score which comprises 51% or more playing time of the album.”[playbill.com]
