Ja, “Billy Elliot” wird in die Schlacht um die Tony Awards 2009 als meistnominiertes Musical (15 Nominierungen) ziehen, aber Sensation ist das keine. Eine Sensation war es, als 2001 “The Producers” für 15 Preise nominiert wurde. Bei “Billy Elliot” war das fast zu erwarten. Ob es verständlich ist, das ist eine andere Frage. Die wahre Sensation bei den Tonys 2009 könnte “Next to Normal” werden. Die Show wurde für 11 Awards vorgeschlagen und hat Chancen in fast allen Hauptkategorien. Genau genommen sind “Billy Elliot” und “Next to Normal” in 10 Kategorien direkte Gegner. Musikalisch gesehen ist “Next to Normal” “Billy Elliot” dermaßen überlegen, dass es ein Wunder wäre, wenn nicht zumindest ein paar der Preise an den Geheimfavoriten gehen würden. Wer wird gewinnen? Eine englische Show, die so manch einer, ohne jetzt untergriffig werden zu wollen, als Tanzshow mit Gebrauchsmusik bezeichnet hat, oder ein neues, modernes amerikanisches Musical, das eine ganz andere Zielgruppe anspricht und auf seine Art und Weise emotionell viel direkter durch die Musik spricht.
Enttäuscht wird auf alle Fälle Dolly Parton (”9 to 5″) sein, wurde doch ihre Show in den Hauptkategorien von der Tony-Jury nicht mal vorgeschlagen. Und wie enttäuscht müssen erst die Macher von “A Tale of two Cities” sein, sie gingen gar leer aus.
Wie auch immer, am 7. Juni 2009 ist die Schlacht um die begehrten Tony Awards geschlagen. Ein 25-köpfiges Komitee hat die Nominierungen ausgearbeitet, 750 ausgewählte Mitglieder der Unterhaltungsbranche und der Presse werden nun ihre Wahl treffen.

Lucille Lortel (1900-1999) war eine amerikanische Schauspielerin und Theaterproduzentin, die ganz sicher in Erinnerung bleiben wird, wurde doch ein Award nach ihr benannt, der seit 1986 jedes Jahr an die besten Off-Broadway-Produktionen vergeben wird. Hinter den Lucille Lortel Awards stehen drei Organisationen: die League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers, die Lucille Lortel Foundation und der Theatre Development Fund. 2009 konnte das Musical “Fela!” die meisten Awards abstauben, gleich drei an der Zahl, nämlich:

Am 1. Mai 2009 werden die diesjährigen Drama Desk Awards vergeben, ein Preis, der seit 1955 von Schriftstellern, Kritikern und Redakteuren für Theater in New York verliehen wird.
Was die diesjährigen Nominierungen betrifft, so sollte man in die Beurteilung mit einbeziehen, dass sich die Verantwortlichen entschieden haben, eine der herausragendsten aktuellen Broadway-Shows, “Next to Normal”, nicht bei ihren Überlegungen, wer einen Preis bekommen könnte, mit einzubeziehen. “Next to Normal” lief im Vorjahr als Off-Broadway-Show, und für die Broadway-Produktion forderten die Produzenten eine Einstufung als “völlig neue Show”, was die Jury vorerst ablehnte. Die Folge des Disputs zwischen Jury und Produzenten: Man verpasste Fristen, die Show fiel komplett aus dem Rennen um Drama Desk und Outer Critics Circle Awards heraus. Bei den Tony Awards jedoch ist “Next to Normal” in allen Kategorien teilnahmeberechtigt. Insofern sind weder Drama Desk noch Outer Critics Circle Awards in diesem Jahr so etwas wie Trendbarometer für die Tony Awards.
Ansonsten heißt es bei den Drama Desk Awards: Dolly Parton Superstar. Gleich 15 Nominierungen heimste die Country-Sängerin mit ihrer Show “9 to 5″ ein, dicht gefolgt von “Shrek” (12 Awards) und “Billy Elliot” (10 Awards). Möge also ein Wunder geschehen, und möge “Next to Normal” DER Abräumer bei den Tonys 2009 werden.

Am 15. Mai 2009 werden die begehrten Drama League Awards im New Yorker Marriott Marquis Hotel verliehen. Es ist dies die traditionsreichste Preisverleihung der USA für besondere Leistungen auf dem Gebiet des Theaters. Die Drama League wurde 1916 gegründet, seit 1933 werden Awards unter anderem für das beste Musical, das beste Theaterstück, das beste Musical-Revival und das beste Revival im Bereich des Sprechtheaters vergeben. In der Nacht zum Montag fand in New York die diesjährige Tony-Awards-Verleihung statt. Wer waren die großen Favoriten? Zur Erinnerung eine kleine Auflistung der nominierten Musicals: “In The Heights” (13), “South Pacific” (11), “Sunday in the Park with George” (9), “Passing Strange” (7), “Gypsy” (7), “Xanadu” (4), “Cry-Baby” (4), “Young Frankenstein” (3), “A Catered Affair” (3), “A Little Mermaid” (2), “Grease” (1).
Der große Sieger der diesjährigen Awards im Bereich “Musical” heißt: REVIVAL - oder auch: “South Pacific” & “Gypsy”. Im Wettstreit der eher konservativen Verehrer des sagen wir mal “klassischen Musicals” und der eher modern orientierten Erneuerer hat sich in diesem Jahr das “Klassische” durchgesetzt. Mit insgesamt 7 Tony Awards ist das “South Pacific”-Revival der überragende Gewinner. Das “Gypsy”-Revival konnte 3 Mal punkten, weiters gingen Preise an “In The Heights”, darunter jener für das “Beste Musical”, und “Passing Strange”.
Die ersten Tony Awards wurden im Jahre 1947 verliehen. Die ersten zehn Musicals, die die seit 1949 bestehende Kategorie “Best Musical” für sich entscheiden konnten, waren: “Kiss Me, Kate” (1949), “South Pacific” (1950), “Guys and Dolls” (1951), “The King and I” (1952), “Wonderful Town” (1953), “Kismet” (1954), “Pajama Game” (1955), “Damn Yankees” (1956), “My Fair Lady” (1957) und “The Music Man” (1958). Es ist fraglich, ob man sich in 50+ Jahren an so manches 2008 nominierte Musical überhaupt noch erinnern wird. Vielleicht war auch das ein nicht zu unterschätzender Grund dafür, eine Show wie “South Pacific”, die schon vor 58 Jahren zu den Gewinnern zählte, erneut mit Preisen zu überhäufen.
Ein wenig sollte sich American Theatre Wing, der Gründer der Tony Awards, Gedanken machen, wie man in Zukunft die Preisverleihung auch online besser zugänglich machen könnte. Per Webcast die Verleihung der weniger prestigeträchtigen Awards zu zeigen und dann während der Livesendung im US-Fernsehen eine Thank-You-Cam (die nur sehr wenige Künstler überhaupt nutzten) ins Netz zu senden, ist eine Art Anfang, aber ein doch recht spärlicher.
Wenn ein Musical so viele Awards für sich entscheiden kann wie “South Pacific”, ist die Enttäuschung bei vielen anderen Mitbewerbern meist groß. So sind die Verlierer dieser Tony Awards jene Produktionen, die ganz leer ausgegangen sind: “Sunday in the Park with George” (9 Nominierungen), “Xanadu” (4 Nominierungen), “Cry-Baby” (4 Nominierungen), “Young Frankenstein” (3 Nominierungen), “A Catered Affair” (3 Nominierungen), “The Litttle Mermaid” (2 Nominierungen) und “Grease” (1 Nominierung).

Am 13. Mai 2008 wurden die Nominierungen für die diesjährigen Tony-Awards bekannt gegeben. Einsam an der Spitze der nominierten Uraufführungen: “In The Heights” mit Chancen auf gleich 13 Preise. Auf den Plätzen folgen Revivals von “South Pacific” mit 11 Nominierungen und “Sunday in the Park with George” mit 9 Nominierungen.
Nur auf 3 Nominierungen brachte es Mel Brooks mit “Young Frankenstein”, auch für “A Catered Affair” (3 Nominierungen) und “The Little Mermaid” (2 Nominierungen) werden die nächsten Wochen nicht leicht, wirken die Tonys doch nicht allzu selten als schicksalbestimmend, was die Zukunft der schlecht abschneidenden Produktionen betrifft. Am 12. Mai 2008 wählte der New York Drama Critics’ Circle das beste Musical und das beste Sprechtheaterstück des Jahres. Drei Wahlgänge waren notwendig, um die Kategorie “Best Musical” zu entscheiden. Mit 43 Punkten ging der Preis an “Passing Strange”. “Adding Machine” unterlag mit 37 Punkten. Mit zehn Nominierungen ging Mel Brooks’ Musical “Young Frankenstein” ins Rennen um die diesjährigen Outer Critics Circle Awards, aber der große Gewinner ist - ein Revival: “South Pacific”, mit insgesamt vier Preisen. “Gypsy”, ebenfalls ein Revival, folgt im Musicalbereich auf Platz zwei mit insgesamt zwei Auszeichnungen. Lucille Lortel (1900-1999) war eine amerikanische Schauspielerin und Theaterproduzentin, die ganz sicher in Erinnerung bleiben wird, wurde doch ein Award nach ihr benannt, der seit 1986 jedes Jahr an die besten Off-Broadway-Produktionen vergeben wird. Hinter den Lucille Lortel Awards stehen drei Organisationen: die League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers, die Lucille Lortel Foundation und der Theatre Development Fund. 2008 konnte das Musical “Adding Machine” die meisten Awards abstauben, gleich vier an der Zahl, nämlich:

Seit der Theatersaison 1949/1950 vergeben die New Yorker Kritiker die Outer Critics Circle Awards für die besten Theaterproduktionen am Broadway und Off-Broadway. Die Nominierungen werden jedes Jahr im April bekannt gegeben, Ende Mai werden die Awards traditionsgemäß im Sardi’s Restaurant in Manhattan, New York City, verliehen, ungefähr zwei Wochen vor den Tony Awards.

Am 7. Februar 2008 wurden die Nominierungen für die begehrten Olivier Awards bekanntgegeben, am 9. März 2008 ging die Preisverleihung im Londoner Grosvenor House Hotel über die Bühne.
Die Londoner Produktion von “Hairspray” spielte im Rennen um 11 der Preise mit - ein Rekord. Die Donmar Warehouse-Produktion von Jason Robert Browns “Parade” kam auf insgesamt 7 Nominierungen.
“Hairspray” war für folgende Auszeichnungen im Rennen: “Best New Musical”, “Best Actress In A Musical” (Leanne Jones), “Best Actor In A Musical” (Michael Ball), “Best Performance In A Supporting Role In A Musical” (Tracie Bennett and Elinor Collett), “Best Director” (Jack O’Brien), “Best Theatre Choreographer” (Jerry Mitchell) und in allen Design-Kategorien.
