Petula Clark, who played Norma Desmond in the London and the second U.S. national tour of Sunset Boulevard, will return to that role next month.
Clark will play the faded silent-screen star in two concerts of the musical at the Royal Opera House in Cork. She will be joined by Aspects of Love’s Michael Ball as the doomed screenwriter Joe Gillis; this marks the first time Ball has performed the role onstage. The concerts of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Don Black musical will be presented April 23 and 24 and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, May 2 at 7 PM.
The 1950 film “Sunset Boulevard,” directed by Billy Wilder, concerned an out- of-work screenwriter named Joe Gillis who happens upon the home of former silent-screen star Norma Desmond. William Holden and Gloria Swanson starred in the film, which won three Academy Awards. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s musical version debuted in London with Patti LuPone as Norma. Other Normas included Betty Buckley, Elaine Paige, Glenn Close, Diahann Carroll, Petula Clark, Helen Schneider, Linda Balgord and Debra Byrne.
Michael Ball made his Broadway debut as Alex in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love, a role he created on the London stage. His other London stage credits include The Pirates of Penzance, Les Misà©rables, The Phantom of the Opera, Passion and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Am Montag, den 15.3.2004, präsentierte Musicalstar Thomas Borchert seine neue CD Borchert DeLuxe im Wiener Szenetempel Metropol. Der Hamburger Krolock, sichtlich gut drauf, rang sich, und das darf fast als Sensation des Abends bezeichnet werden, entgegen seinen Prinzipien, bei Solokonzerten Lieder aus Musicals wie die Pest zu meiden, sogar einen “Letzten Tanz” ab - heftigst akklamiert von seinen Fans und Sylvester Levay, den Komponisten des Hits aus “Elisabeth”. Insgesamt bot Borchert eine solide Show, die in ihren besten Momenten durchaus klassische Piano-Man-Qualitäten erreichte. In jenen Momenten fragt man sich, was aus einem Borchert hätte werden können, wenn er sich völlig auf seine selbstkomponierten Songs konzentriert hätte. Aber das ist ein Kapitel, das nie geschrieben wurde, und Borcherts Karriere als Solo-Entertainer ist ohne seine Präsenz als Musicalstar längst undenkbar.

Dionne Warwick, 5-fache Grammy-Preisträgerin, Soul-Superstar … und neuerdings auch Buchautorin weilt derzeit in Wien, um ihr Werk “My Point of View” zu promoten. Im Virgin Megastore fand am 4. März 2004 eine Signierstunde statt, die in entspannter und lockerer Atmosphäre über die Bühne ging. Der charmante Weltstar nahm sich ausführlich für Fans und Verehrer Zeit und beantwortete vor dem Booksigning auch willig Fragen eines Radio Wien-Reporters. Dionne Warwick hat mit diesem Buch nicht etwa eine Autobiographie verfasst, vielmehr handelt es sich um eine Auswahl von privaten und bisher unveröffentlichten Photos, die von der Sängerin kommentiert werden. Dem Werk ist eine CD mit 4 bisher unveröffentlichten Songs beigelegt. Das Package wechselt für 49,50 Euro den Besitzer. Hoffentlich noch in diesem Jahr wird Dionne Warwick auch als Sängerin wieder in Wien gastieren. Für den Herbst sind Termine in Planung.

Am 3. März 2004 feierte die zutiefst österreichische Operetten- und Musical-Diva Dagmar Koller nach drei Jahren Bühnenabstinenz ihr Comeback am Theater an der Wien. Ist es ein Abschied von der Bühne gewesen oder ein veritables Comeback? So genau weiß man das nicht. Pläne, mit einer Soloshow auf Tournee zu gehen, existieren. Doch nach der Show gab Dagi an, zuerst mal sechs Monate Pause vom Showbusiness machen zu wollen. Schrullig, tapsig und an manchen Stellen doch berührend, begeisterte Dagmar Koller Fans und Promis, die sich bei diesem Event wohl in etwa die Waage hielten. Den Abend im Theater an der Wien gestaltete die Koller mit Ihren Lieblingssongs aus 40 Jahren Showbusiness. So manch Interpretation, beseelt vom Wunsch, es einfach mal anders zu machen (zum Beispiel “Memory” aus “Cats”), kippte, doch mit Jahrhundert-Standards wie “I am what I am” oder “Send in the Clowns” ließ die Diva Klasse aufblitzen.

Barry Manilow will be one of the celebrity guest judges on the current season of “American Idol,” Billboard.com has learned. In live episodes airing April 19-20, Manilow will sit in as a judge alongside Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. The episodes will feature the contestants performing Manilow songs, and Manilow himself will perform on the April 20 edition.
“American Idol,” currently in its third season, is Fox’s highest-rated series of the year so far, according to Nielsen Media Research. Producers are currently trying to persuade Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder to be guest judges on the show. [story]

Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, authors of the musical, Harmony, have won back the rights to the show from the producer who failed to bring the work to fruition in late 2003.
According to composer Manilow’s publicist, a panel of three arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association rendered an interim award in favor of Manilow and lyricist-librettist Bruce Sussman in their arbitration proceeding involving the musical play.
According to a statement released Feb. 19 by Manilow spokesman Jerry J. Sharell, “The arbitration panel unanimously and unequivocally ruled that the rights of the former producer of the play, Snorkel Productions, Inc., have terminated; that Snorkel is to return to Manilow and Sussman all literary materials relating to Harmony; and that Snorkel is to immediately cease acting as producer for Harmony or dealing with Harmony in any manner. The unanimous award of the arbitration panel represents a vindication of the position taken by Manilow and Sussman in the arbitration proceedings.” Sharell added, “The authors couldn’t be reached for comment.
