ABC-TV will present a new television movie based on the life of Lena Horne next year.
The New York Post reports that Grammy Award winner Janet Jackson will portray the legendary star of stage and screen in the new biopic. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron — of “Chicago” film fame — will produce the movie, which will feature Jackson singing the tunes Horne made famous.
The telefilm will be based on “Lena,” the autobiography written by Horne with contributions by Time Magazine’s Richard Shickel.
Lena Horne made her Broadway debut in the 1934 play Dance With Your Gods. She also starred in the original musical revue Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds of 1939 and the musical Jamaica; she was nominated for a Tony Award for her work in the latter. In 1981 she returned to Broadway with Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, winning a Special Tony Award for her performance. Horne’s many screen credits include “Panama Hattie,” “Cabin in the Sky,” “Stormy Weather,” “Broadway Rhythm,” “Till the Clouds Roll By” and “The Wiz.” [story]

Auf “Une fille et 4 types” interpretiert sie Songs der bekannten französischen Komponisten Erick Benzi, Jacques Veneruso und Gildas Arzel. Als Produzenten fungierten Benzi und Jean Jacques Goldman. Joey McIntyre and Jodi Benson will replace the previously announced Neil Patrick Harris and Rachel York in the upcoming Reprise! concert of Babes in Arms.
Featuring direction by Glenn Casale and choreography by Dan Mojica, the Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart classic will play UCLA’s Freud Playhouse Sept. 9-21 with an official opening set for Wednesday, Sept. 10. Gerald Sternbach is musical director for the production, which features such classic tunes as «Where or When,†«Babes in Arms,†«I Wish I Were in Love Again,†«My Funny Valentine,†«Johnny One Note†and «The Lady Is a Tramp.â€
In a statement Reprise! Producing Director Marcia Seligson said, “Of course we are thrilled that Joey McIntyre and Jodi Benson are going to be starring in our season opener Babes in Arms. We look forward to working with Neil Patrick Harris and Rachel York in future Reprise! productions.

Recent newspaper headlines, proclaiming “Barry Manilow Breaks Nose” have already achieved the same notoriety as “Fog in Channel: Continent Cut Off” and “Dundee Man Drowns: 1500 Also Die As Titanic Hits Iceberg”.
There is something deliciously absurd about the man and his world-famous proboscis, but not so absurd to have prevented him from selling 58 million records, winning a Grammy, an Emmy, a Tony and playing both the Superbowl and Bill Clinton’s inaugural ball.
Manilow’s idiosyncratic brand of easy listening music has won him a legion of adoring middle-aged matrons, yet the man himself remains charmingly disarming and refreshingly self-deprecating. [story]

With a boost from Oprah Winfrey’s relaunched book club, John Steinbeck’s East of Eden has pushed Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Living History to the No. 3 spot on the USA TODAY Best-selling Books list, not bad for a novel first published in 1952. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix remains No. 1, however, outselling East of Eden almost 18 to 1. [story]
